Blue River Running - Komarin Solo Exhibition

From December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, the Murray Hill Art Museum will hold the solo exhibition "Blue River Running" by the world-renowned abstract art master Gary Komarin.
The exhibition will display Komarin's poetic and passionate oil paintings and works on paper, including the most representative works of the "Cake," "Vessel," and "River" series.
The pop art-style "Cake" series is regarded as Komarin's most representative and successful work. The roughly outlined central image - the cake, appears repeatedly on a series of subtle lyrical backgrounds.
The "Vessel" series expresses the artist's "primitive form of time confrontation" through painting. Komarin has always been fascinated by the structure and shape of traditional vases - various vases from early Egyptian, Mayan civilization, or ancient Greece, with excellent balance and solemnity. He seeks inspiration from the form of these traditional objects, partly because of their eternal nature. For Komarin, painting vases is a very malleable activity - "It allows me to make a lot of interesting changes, and no one knows what they will eventually become."
The "River" series comprehensively reflects Komarin's understanding and innovation of abstract painting. He believes that in abstract painting, color is considered the main means of expression and communication, more important than form, line, and content. Color relies on its power to convey emotions, moods, and feelings. This exhibition's "River" series fully demonstrates Komarin's expression and mastery of color. Each painting handles and controls color differently; they are bold and vibrant, like poetry.
As for Komarin, abstraction is never a dead end. On the contrary, abstract painting allows him to challenge the limitations and diversity of style, making the painting "contain more" because recognizable images lose too much.
Gary Komarin is a contemporary artist born in New York City who is deeply influenced by the "New York School," especially his mentor Philip Guston at Boston University. His unique sense of form and way of painting have influenced Komarin's artistic thought and creation. His works echo the most active New York art since the 1960s—abstract expressionism and pop art—and are in the same vein as the "New York School."
As early as 1996, Gary Komarin's works were exhibitied along with Basquiat, Philip Guston, and other painters. Robert Motherwell and Clyfford Still, representative artists of American abstract art, are mentors and friends in his artistic career.
In October 2024, Komarin's third solo exhibition, "Landscape with a Cup," was held in Seoul, South Korea, and upcoming solo exhibitions include a show in South America. Subsequent solo exhibitions in New York, London, Vienna, Hong Kong, and Shanghai will also be held the exhibitions one after another.
Over the years, Komarin's works have been well-received and widely praised by audiences worldwide, making Komarin deeply satisfied and highly excited. “It’s amazing! One need not speak English to get involved with my painting. As my work speaks to the human condition, the audience is multi-various and culturally very open-ended. My work speaks to all people. ” Komarin said.
Yang Hao, curator of Murray Hill Art Museum, said: "Komarin's works are not only touching but also express the most intriguing images of our time - fairy tales, dreams, fragility, alienation, etc. This exhibition will show Gary Komarin, a great artist, his profound thinking about our times and infinite sympathy and love for humanity!"
